What is stress?

What are the different types of stress?

As cited by the American Psychological Association (APA), there are three major types:

1. Chronic Stress: The most damaging type, chronic stress is capable of bringing adverse and irreversible effects on almost all the systems of your body. It is the outcome of being frequently and repeatedly exposed to stress-inducing events. Some of the most common chronic stressors include ongoing financial distress, unemployment, toxic relationships, substance abuse and so on. Chronic stress is extremely dangerous, if left untreated, and it may even lead to suicide.

2. Acute Stress: Of a brief and short-term nature, acute stress is the most prevailing type. It results from events from the recent past or what could happen in the near future. Negative thinking pattern is considered to induce acute stress. A recent altercation or disagreement that keeps provoking you could be treated as the best example for an acute stressor.

3. Episodic Acute Stress: If you feel frequently affected by acute stress, then you are probably going through what is termed as episodic acute stress. When there are too many responsibilities to fulfill, a sense of constant worry gains over you, subjecting you to episodic acute stress.

1. Internal causes: More of a self-generated sort, internal causes are those triggers that come from within you. Some of the most common internal causes are:

  • Negative attitude towards life
  • Low self-worth
  • Perfectionism
  • Rigid thought patterns
  • Negative self-talk
  • Impractical expectations

2. External causes: External stressors pertain to your environment, external circle and events happening around you. Some of the major external causes include:

  • Financial problems
  • Job-related issues
  • Loss of dear ones
  • Marital problems
  • Too much of workload
